The wave of digitization brought about by information technology such as the Internet, mobile computing, cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, big data, etc. is changing our lives, covering consumption, entertainment, social networking, business, transportation, education, etc. Change also means challenges and opportunities. This course hopes to develop students' innovative ability and entrepreneurship by introducing and discussing different startup cases driven by information technology, including past failures, so as to cope with the challenges and opportunities brought about by change.
When studying a case, we will focus on the business model innovation brought about by information technology, such as innovations brought about through new value propositions, pricing models, service models, or channels. Examples include AirBnB, Uber Eats, and WeWork of the sharing economy, and the fitness innovation company Peloton that boosted by the epidemic. We will also elaborate on three innovative paths: challenging the status quo, finding unmet needs, and foreseeing emerging trends. Finally, most business models can be imitated, so business model innovation can only bring short-term advantages. Therefore, when thinking about business model innovation, innovators must also think about how to build competitive barriers from this short-term advantage to defend against the threat of latecomers. |
